1960's Ashley 1172
Registration No. ELC 518
It was in June 2024 that I heard
about this Ashley 1172 Hardtop Coupe.
I received an email from Stephen Foster telling
me all about his ownership:
about this Ashley 1172 Hardtop Coupe.
I received an email from Stephen Foster telling
me all about his ownership:
When I was just 19 I bought secondhand an Ashley convertible that had a hardtop retrofitted permanently, the registration number was ELC 518.
It was a Ford 1172 engine with double valve springs, was fitted with twin SU's on a 4 branch manifold, it had 3 speed gearbox with a strange egg shaped gear knob of Sycamore wood, a boxed E93A chassis, with a Red bodyshell.
It had extended drivers/Passenger side footwells so as to allow 4 people to travel.

Stephen also went on to explain how a day out at the Brands Hatch Race Track changed the styling of his Ashley and his life:
I was coming back from Brands Hatch with a friend when it started bucketing down with rain. Soon afterwards the single windscreen wiper decided to give up and driving was very difficult.
I ended up going across at a crossroads and being hit on the passenger side rear side corner by a Morris 1000 Traveller and limped home.
I decided to rebuild the back end in the style of a Ferrari GT 3, round rear lamps, stop, indicator and reverse on each side, a recessed number plate and tail flip up in grp. (Fibreglass)

This got me interested in grp and I was soon running a successful grp company of my own - FIBRESPORTS
In those days we were making racing saloon parts and road car customising in which we were major players.
A few years on and we were buying our materials from grp factors prop Bob Brain, an ex Director of Ashley !!!
I then bought the grp arm of Williams & Pritchard, and Len became a mentor and friend. We were producing his hardtops in competition with Ashley !!!
I still run the company to this day although we have moved into Sculptural works largely for theatre, tv and film etc, etc.
It's FIBRESPORTS-ACRYLIC, all from 1969 until now.

Sadly Stephen has no photo's of his Ashley from before or after his modifications, he mentioned that he lived in the Billericay, Essex,
(which was about 25 miles from the Ashley factory).
When he finished the repair & mods he sold it to an acquaintance who he thinks lived in Brentwood, Essex.
