This Ashley 1172 Hardtop Coupe was sent to me in

by George Taylor with the following message attached:
I was just browsing the net and don't know why I searched on Ashley fibreglass specials and came up with your website.
Oh what a surprise and I thought I was the only person to remember the Ashley's.
I will send you some pictures (Whatever I can find) of my car from 1959/ 60 and although I don't think I have any pictures of the conversion I will have fun remembering those days.
Best regards and I'll be in Touch.
George.

I replied that I would be very happy to see his car and add it
to the relevant website, asking what model he had and what was it’s registration number, also had he checked the index to see if it was already listed on my site?
Adding that I was looking forward to hearing from him and reading all the details of his Ashley.

Hi Ivor.
Just one picture as yet. Rego No. you can just see but I need to find it I think it was 5339 TA
I bought the shell from Ashley when they were at the side of the Pub near High beech. But I can't remember what model it was, I bought a running chassis from a breaker without a body and rebuilt it, strengthening the chassis and using Ford 8HP and 10HP parts.
Unfortunately I don't think I have any photos of the rebuilding but will look.

It would appear that George also had a liking for motorbikes,
as he sent this photo also.
This is George on his BSA.

It was a coldish April day here in Victoria, Oz, so I was looking at my History of UK Motor Registrations book, indoors in the warm and I reckon George's car must have been registered in Essex, UK, between Nov. 1959 and Feb. 1960, and the number being 5339 TW, so I asked how that matched up with his memory?
Hi Ivor.
Yes, your reply certainly jogged my memory.
Yes, the rego number was TW and model 1172. I seem to remember that I used my own number and it was a personalised number to something in my history but not sure what now.
The hard top was a bolt on originally but I fixed it and fibre glassed it on, I used the original cream Gel coat until I think just before my wedding when I hand painted it with a light blue, I think it was a "baby blue". No brush marks and it looked like a professional job.

Registration would have been Essex as at the time of construction I was living in Connaught Avenue Chingford, E4, so only some 5 miles from Ashley factory.
The timing you gave is about right as I built it during my engineering apprenticeship days at the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield and being born in 1940 would put your timing about right.
Do have any later history on the car, I sold it to a guy in Enfield and can probably find the address on Google maps. I guess it's probably in the great car park in the sky now.
That's it for now. Keep safe
George
